AlpInvest Partners is a private equity investor founded in Amsterdam in 2000, originally to manage private equity allocations for two large Dutch pension funds. Rather than buying companies directly, AlpInvest invests in private equity funds, alongside those funds in individual deals, and in secondary transactions where existing fund stakes change hands. Since 2011 Carlyle Group has held a stake in AlpInvest, and it later became a wholly owned subsidiary, now operating as Carlyle's global private equity solutions platform. AlpInvest is organised around three main investment strategies: fund investments (commitments to other private equity funds), co-investments (investing alongside those funds directly into companies), and secondaries (buying existing stakes in funds or portfolios). Each strategy has its own investment team, supported by shared research, portfolio monitoring and operations functions.
