BNG Bank was founded in 1914 by the Association of Dutch Municipalities as a credit institution to fund local government investment. Over time it grew into the Bank Nederlandse Gemeenten, and it has carried the name BNG Bank since 2018. The bank does not serve private customers: it exclusively finances the Dutch public sector, including municipalities, provinces, water boards, public housing corporations and healthcare and education institutions. Its shares are held half by the Dutch State and half by municipalities, provinces and a water board, reflecting its role as a public-sector financing institution rather than a commercial bank.BNG Bank werd in 1914 opgericht door de Vereniging van Nederlandse Gemeenten als kredietinstelling om investeringen van lokale overheden te financieren. In de loop der tijd groeide de bank uit tot de Bank Nederlandse Gemeenten, en sinds 2018 draagt zij de naam BNG Bank. De bank bedient geen particuliere klanten: zij financiert uitsluitend de Nederlandse publieke sector, waaronder gemeenten, provincies, waterschappen, woningcorporaties en zorg- en onderwijsinstellingen. De aandelen zijn voor de helft in handen van de Nederlandse Staat en voor de helft van gemeenten, provincies en een waterschap, wat haar rol als publieke financieringsinstelling onderstreept in plaats van een commerciële bank.
