It has since broadened its lending to other parts of the public sector, including municipalities, provinces, housing corporations and healthcare institutions, but water authorities remain central to its identity and ownership. Like BNG Bank, NWB Bank does not serve private customers and instead raises funds on international capital markets to finance public-sector borrowers, typically at favourable rates reflecting the strength of its public shareholders.NWB Bank, de Nederlandse Waterschapsbank, werd in 1954 opgericht om de Nederlandse waterschappen te helpen bij het financieren van de grootschalige investeringen die nodig zijn voor waterveiligheid en waterbeheer. Sindsdien heeft de bank haar kredietverlening verbreed naar andere delen van de publieke sector, waaronder gemeenten, provincies, woningcorporaties en zorginstellingen, maar de waterschappen blijven centraal staan in haar identiteit en aandeelhouderschap.
