Triodos Bank was founded in 1980 in the Netherlands, growing out of study groups from the late 1960s that explored alternative, values-based approaches to finance. From the start it set out to lend only to organisations and projects with social, cultural or environmental value, such as renewable energy, organic farming and social housing. The bank operates across several European countries in addition to the Netherlands, and alongside its banking activities it runs Triodos Investment Management, launched in 1999 to offer sustainable investment funds to institutional and private investors.
