The organisation
What AlpInvest Partners does
AlpInvest Partners is a private equity investor founded in Amsterdam in 2000, originally to manage private equity allocations for two large Dutch pension funds. Rather than buying companies directly, AlpInvest invests in private equity funds, alongside those funds in individual deals, and in secondary transactions where existing fund stakes change hands. Since 2011 Carlyle Group has held a stake in AlpInvest, and it later became a wholly owned subsidiary, now operating as Carlyle's global private equity solutions platform. It remains one of the larger private equity investors of its kind, with Amsterdam as one of its main offices alongside locations such as New York and Hong Kong.

AlpInvest Partners in the Netherlands
AlpInvest's office is in Amsterdam, and this is a genuine, substantial base for the firm rather than a small regional outpost, alongside its offices in New York and Hong Kong. Much of the investment team that evaluates funds, co-investments and secondaries works from Amsterdam. For finance students this is one of the more established Dutch entry points into the fund investing side of private equity, distinct from firms that buy and run companies directly.
Structure
Divisions and where you work
AlpInvest is organised around three main investment strategies: fund investments (commitments to other private equity funds), co-investments (investing alongside those funds directly into companies), and secondaries (buying existing stakes in funds or portfolios). Each strategy has its own investment team, supported by shared research, portfolio monitoring and operations functions. Analysts and associates typically join one of these investment teams.
Getting in
How students start here
AlpInvest runs a structured internship and analyst programme for students, including roles aimed specifically at bachelor and master students interested in private equity, responsible investment and analytics. This gives it a somewhat more accessible entry route for students than firms that buy companies directly, though competition for permanent roles remains high and many hires also come with prior experience in banking or consulting.
